The 100 Greatest in Aviation were announced as a 100th Birthday celebration for Flight International Magazine, with a Moon Fact, Neil Armstrong’s steps from Apollo 11 onto the moon topping the list.
The announcement was made at the Farnborough Air Show, which was held in Hampshire, England.
The 100 Greatest in Aviation campaign was conducted online, by Flight International’s website, Flightglobal.com, in association with Bombardier.
“We’ve had some really iconic aircraft and moments that have been nominated by thousands of Flightglobal.com readers and users, but the Apollo 11 landing was truly a golden age of mankind reaching new boundaries in science and technology,” explained Murdo Morrison, editor of Flight International.
He continued, “The 100 Greatest in Aviation campaign was to highlight the fantastic achievements in the industry over the past century and I think it’s gone incredibly well.”
Other honours were delivered to the world’s first wide-body and most recognisable jet, the Boeing 747, with the Wright Brothers in third position and the supersonic airliner Concorde in fourth.
The list also featured the military aircraft, the Supermarine Spitfire, as well as Charles Lindberg for his solo transatlantic flight, the Airbus A380 superjumbo, and Amelia Earheart.
The public decision was also influenced by some high profilers within the industry, such as president of Virgin Galactic, who selected a 747 as his favourite aircraft.
Similarly, Formula One head, Sir Frank Williams, admitted that he believed the bomber B-52 to be the greatest aircraft of the last century.
