A recent survey has maybe uncovered the latest destination for travellers-sleep. The survey shows that travellers spend almost a third of their travel budget on accommodation.
The Visa and Pacific Asia Association (PATA) survey, titled “Determining Travel Preferences in 2009 and Beyond”, was conducted from in August 2008 and surveyed 5554 travellers from across the Asia Pacific.
It was found that 30% of the average travel budget, excluding airfares, was spent on accommodation, 22% on food and beverages, 10% on airport duty free stores and 9% on clothing accessories, 8% on ATM withdrawals.
Arts and crafts, sports apparel, electronic and electrical goods, leather goods and bags took up the remainder of the budget.
Greg Duffell, PATA President and CEO, agrees with the figures and advises that accommodation is clearly expected to increase with an expected 450 million international travellers to go to Asia between 2009 and 2011.
Australians were found to be the biggest spenders while on holidays, spending an average US$4,390 compared to an average spending budget of US$2,302 the total number of respondents.
The second highest holiday spenders were from India, spending US$3,071, whilst Chinese respondents came in third spending an average US$2,659.
The Japanese and Americans spent the most on accommodation with 36% and 35% respectively dedicated to it in the budget. Three-star hotels were the choice for the Japanese (35 percent) and Americans preferred four and five star accommodation (36 percent for each category).
Spending least on accommodation were those from India (21 percent) and China (23 percent), choosing three-star hotels as the preferred accommodation (29 and 28 percent respectively).
